The Mail & Guardian says it does not believe it acted improperly by posting a controversial Special Assignment documentary on its website.

The SABC has laid a charge of theft against the paper, accusing it of obtaining the material unlawfully.

The documentary on political satire featured cartoonist Jonathan Shapiro, better known as Zapiro.

The programme's screening has been suspended by the SABC twice.

Thousands of people logged on to view the video soon after it was posted.

The M&G's Nic Dawes says the public has the right to view controversial material.

"The episode of Special Assignment that the SABC has twice pulled off the air — we think is Something South Africans should have a chance to see and decide what they think the basis of the decision not to run it was," says Dawes.
