Western Cape Community Safety MEC Lennit Max says he will not tolerate police officers who are guilty of manipulating crime statistics.

Max held an internal meeting with a number of police station commissioners and high-ranking officials in Bishop Lavis on Thursday.

Max has proposed that the province?s police stations be audited to verify whether all crimes are being registered.

The province's 147 police stations will be subjected to the internal audit in a few months time.

He added police stations cannot manipulate crime statistics and thereby falsely reflect a decrease in crime.

Max, also a former Western Cape police commissioner, is aiming to root out officials who are allegedly on the payrolls of drug lords.

Those suspected of doing so will have to undergo a lie detector test.
