Nine motorists have been arrested for drunken driving, Ekurhuleni Metro Police said on Saturday.

Inspector Jimmy Maboko said the arrests were made on Friday in Tokhoza, Vosloorus and Katlehong, in an operation to clamp down on the high number of accidents taking place.

"They are being detained and will appear in the Vosloorus Magistrate's Court on Monday," said Maboko.

The EMPD also arrested 75 other motorists on charges of contempt of court, for outstanding warrants.

"Some have paid a fine and those who want to contest the charges will appear in the Vosloorus court on Monday."

The operation was carried out by members of the Tokhoza, Vosloorus and Katlehong precincts of the EMPD.
