A Constantia resident who had been kidnapped at the Constantia Village shopping centre was rescued by Western Cape police on Saturday.
Captain Frederick van Wyk said police surprised three of Sandra Loond's alleged hijackers by posing as family members intending to pay the ransom.
Loond was kidnapped by an unknown number of men at the Constantia Village shopping centre at around 9pm on Wednesday after she had done her shopping.
"The men pushed her into a vehicle and drove away," said Van Zyl.
On Saturday morning, the police met the alleged kidnappers on Hindle road on the way to Bluedowns.
"They (the police) pretended to be family and handed over the bag (of money).
"They secured the woman and arrested the men," said Van Zyl.
A shooting occurred and two of the men ran into a nearby wetland while their accomplice was arrested.
"We called in the helicopter and arrested the other two," said Van Zyl.
The men will appear in the Wynberg Magistrate's Court on Monday morning.
Van Zyl did not want to divulge the details of the ransom, except to say that it was "several hundreds of thousands of rands".
"We are still investigating to see whether there were more hijackers," he said.
Loond will undergo counselling and a debriefing before she will make a statement, Van Zyl said.
Got something to say?
