Television producers have accused the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) of using the recession as an excuse for their financial woes.

Producers and other members from the industry will be marching to the public broadcaster's head office in Auckland Park on Thursday and have called on the public to join them.

The SABC has failed to pay local suppliers of programmes leaving many production companies on the verge of shutting down.

Television producer Charl Blignaut said the crisis has been long time coming.

"While everybody else is lobbying for inflation based increases we looking at budgets being slashed once again and now the recession's being blamed but this is going on for years," Blignaut remarked.
