Single cells were expected to accommodate mothers and their new-born babies in prisons around the country, the SABC reported on Saturday.

Deputy Correctional Services minister Hlengiwe Mkhize told a media briefing in Durban that while accommodation would be provided, children would only be allowed to stay with their mothers until they were two-years-old.

Thereafter, they would be taken care of by families, foster parents or daycare facilities.

Mkhize said currently there were 168 babies living in South African prisons
