The Congress of the People (Cope) on Saturday called for the Minister of Sports to immediately ask the head of Athletics South Africa (ASA), Leonard Chuene, to stand down.

It was the same request made by the African Christian Democratic Party earlier in the day.

Cope issued a statement saying it was clear that ASA had completely bungled Caster Semenya's case and had misled the public over the issue.

The party also called for ASA to disclose all facts relating to Semenya.

Cope's call comes after Chuene admitted that he had lied to the South African public about not having any knowledge of gender tests conducted on Semenya in Pretoria on 7 August.

Chuene said ASA's deception on the matter was intended to protect Semenya's confidentiality.
