Power supply is being restored at the 67 schools that had it cut
by the Tshwane municipality in the past week, Afriforum said on
Saturday.
"It appears that the council is adhering to the court order
granted [on Friday] that they must have the electricity restored by
Saturday at 4.00pm," said chief executive officer, Kallie Kriel.
The civil rights group made an urgent application in the High
Court in Pretoria on Friday to have the power restored after the
council cut the supply following the discovery that the department
of Public Works was in arrears with the payment of property tax to
the city.
AfriForum argued that the 67 schools whose electricity supply
had been cut were treated unfairly as the power supply was cut
without warning.
The court also ordered that the department pay its outstanding
debts to the council and a cost order was granted in favour of
Afriforum.
Kriel said the water and electricity accounts of the affected
schools were paid in full and that pupils were being punished for
negligence on the part of the department.
"Any school that may not have its power restored [as per court
order] can contact us and we will take it further," he said.
