The manager at KwaZulu-Natal's Indaka Municipality has been suspended following allegations of mismanagement of funds, SABC news reported on Thursday.

Milton Mbhele allegedly spent more than R650 000 on the funeral of a former mayor, Phumlani Mpungose who died in June this year, the broadcaster said.

Mbhele made news last weekend when he married four women during a lavish wedding ceremony and slaughtered eight cattle as part of the festivities.

According to The Star newspaper, he only found out about his suspension when he reported for duty on Wednesday, but was refused entry to the office by security officers.

Acting mayor Busisiwe Buthelezi confirmed Mbhele's suspension following Monday's council meeting which she didn't attend.

She insisted that her colleague did nothing wrong in spending the money on the funeral, adding that a unanimous decision was made at a meeting that Mpungose needed a decent burial.

Mbhele said: "There is no reference to the R600 000 on the letter which I received, and for me there is no reason to panic."

He said he would go back to work soon, as there was no substance to the charges brought against him.
