President Jacob Zuma and ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema will tackle issues around skills development and employment when they address hundreds of young people at Youth Day celebrations on the East Rand on Tuesday.

The public holiday marks the 1976 Soweto uprising which saw pupils from township schools demonstrating against apartheid-era policies.

It also marks the launch of the National Youth Development Agency which aims to empower young people.

The ANC’s Ishmael Minisi said the agency would seek to address issues facing the country’s youth.

"The Youth Development Agency is an agency that is formed out of the combination of the Umsobomvu Youth Fund and the Youth Commission. There was a need identified that these two institutions must be combined."
