The graft trial of former police chief Jackie Selebi is set to continue in the High Court in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

The court heard testimony from convicted drug dealer Glenn Agliotti on Tuesday, in which he said he made corrupt payments of "approximately R1-million" to Selebi in return for some favours.

Agliotti acted as the "Selebi consultant" to slain mining magnate Brett Kebble, and charged US1 million for that, he told the court.

The court is expected to hear argument on a technical matter on Wednesday morning.

State prosecutor Gerrie Nel wants Agliotti to testify on an event which does not fall within the time period specified in Selebi's indictment.

The event apparently refers to Selebi allegedly showing Agliotti a top secret UK intelligence report on his involvement in international drug smuggling.

But Selebi's lawyer, Jaap Cilliers, told Judge Meyer Joffe that Nel should not be allowed to question Agliotti about this, because the time when it happened does not fall within the time period specified in the indictment.

Selebi is facing one count of corruption and another of defeating the ends of justice.

The charges relate to payments he allegedly received from Agliotti, Kebble, and ex-Hyundai boss and mining businessman Billy Rautenbach.

The State, in papers before the court, alleged that "Agliotti and/or Kebble and or Rautenbach and/or the relevant corporate entities have benefited the accused in the period 1 January 2000 up to and including 31 December 2005... in an amount of at least but not restricted to R1.2-million."

Agliotti received indemnity from prosecution if he testified against Selebi and answered "frankly and honestly", according to a deal with the State.

He is still facing a murder charge for Kebble's death in 2005.
