The ANC Youth League in the Free State on Thursday reiterated its demand that an ANC member and a Wesselsbron teacher be suspended from work after they allegedly attacked a schoolboy.

Free State ANCYL chairperson Thabo Meeko said it was alleged that the boy was attacked by four teachers, one of them the ANC Whip in the Nala municipality, Mosola Masisi.

Meeko said apparently the 12-year-old boy insulted a teacher and the men "ganged up" against the pupil and assaulted him.

"We have the view that the ANC, premier and the MEC for education must intervene in this case."

Meeko said the teachers need to be suspended until the matter was investigated and the councillor should also be expelled from the municipal council.

"There were calls that the men were not guilty but the safety of the child is more important because during all the (investigative) processes the child does not have a safe environment."

Meeko said the boy had been removed from his home town for safety reasons because his grandmother, his only family, had been receiving threats.

She works at the municipality.

Free State police spokesperson Captain Stephan Thakeng confirmed that a case of assault to inflict grievous bodily harm had been opened against a Nala councillor and teacher, and that the accused had been granted bail after appearing in court earlier this month.

The case was postponed to 22 October.

The ANC in the Free State were not immediately available for comment.
