The Health Professions Council of South Africa has threatened striking doctors with suspension or removal from their register.

It says medical practitioners who go on strike are behaving unethically and are putting patients' lives at risk.

The organisation has indicated it understood the doctors' concerns and urged government to find a solution as soon as possible.

Hundreds of KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape doctors went on strike on Monday, demanding the immediate implementation of the Occupation Specific Dispensation plan. If the OSD is implemented it willl see the professionals earning up to 50 percent more.

The HPCSA's Bertha Scheepers-Peters said: "We understand and acknowledge the concerns around the issue of adequate compensation, however we cannot condone this unlawful strike and we want to say they are in effect breaking the law."
