Some 15 motorists were arrested over the weekend for driving past the legal speed limit of 120km/h, Johannesburg metro police said on Sunday.

Spokesperson Phindani Tebeila said six drivers were arrested on Friday, with one of them, who was driving a Jeep, clocking 139/km/h in an 80km/h zone in Khayalami.

Nine other drivers were arrested on Saturday, among them an Audi A4 driver caught driving at 179km/h on the N1 north freeway near the Olifantsfontein turn-off.

Tebeila said the drivers were taken to the Midrand police station and released after paying fines.

All the drivers were expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Monday.
