KwaZulu-Natal doctors have rejected government's proposed wage increase with contempt — and will now strike indefinitely.

Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi announced a pay hike of between 9.9 and 60 percent on Wednesday.

A move that is expected to cost government around R1-billion.

Health workers have been on strike since Monday and have vowed to continue until their demands, for the Occupation Specific Dispensation plan, are met.

Doctors in KZN met until late on Wednesday night to discuss government's wage offer.

They have slammed the public release of the figures before they were shown to the bargaining council. They believe it is an attempt to mislead the public.

Doctors are demanding a 50 percent hike across the board, saying it is an insult for government to claim it cannot afford more than R1-billion for salaries, when it is rolling out more than that to bailout the SABC.

Doctors in Durban will wear black clothing on Thursday to signify what they are calling the "death" of the health system.
