The KwaZulu-Natal police expressed concern on Monday about domestic violence cases that are reported and withdrawn.

This was after assault charges laid by the wife of former Springbok rugby star Percy Montgomery were withdrawn.

"We understand that this was a very high profile couple but people who report domestic violence cases and withdraw them have to put in consideration that a lot of state time and resources go to waste," said Captain Vincent Mdunge.

On Friday, Tasmin withdrew the assault charge she had laid against her husband Percy.

A statement issued by the couple over the weekend said the charges were "laid in haste and an over-reaction" to an argument between Montgomery and his wife.

Mdunge said police needed to attend to many serious crimes and it put them in a difficult situation when people made hasty decisions on laying charges.

"It's about time something was done about crimes that are reported and withdrawn. People [should] reimburse the state for the time and resources spent when the charge is laid," said Mdunge.

The incident reportedly took place at Tasmin's parents' apartment in Umhlanga Rocks on Sunday last week.

Montgomery appeared in the Verulam Magistrate's Court last Monday and was charged with assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

He was released on bail of R1500.
