Two street children that went missing in a strong flowing water channel in Bloemfontein were found alive but in shock, police said on Monday.

"The two that were missing were found with two other children and they were treated for shock by paramedics at the scene," Captain Chaka Marope said

Marope said all four were taken back to their place of safety in the city after treatment.

Police divers and Mangaung fire rescue personnel started searching for the pair on Monday morning after they fell into the strongly flowing river channel that runs through Bloemfontein around 8am.

Marope said four children were playing next to the channel, near the Wilgehof Primary School, when they apparently fell in.

"Two managed to drift downstream and rescued themselves when they were near the railway lines in Wilgehof."

All of them were between the ages of nine and 12.

Heavy rains had fallen in the Bloemfontein area since Sunday with 70 millimetres measured in the city on Monday.
