Three men died after their car went airborne and landed into a ditch at Phoenix highway in Durban, paramedics said on Saturday.

The driver of the VW Golf5 lost control of the vehicle at the intersection of industrial park drive at midnight, said Netcare911 spokesperson Chris Botha.

"The car went airborne and landed in a ditch. The driver and two occupants all in their 30s were in a critical condition and had to be placed on ventilators by paramedics at the scene."

Two of the men were rushed to the St Augustine hospital and one man to the uMhlanga hospital. However, they died on arrival, he said.
