South African musician, Steve Hofmeyr, has accused the tabloids of being responsible for Joost Van der Westhuizen’s collapse.

The former Springbok captain is reported to be in a stable condition and is undergoing tests at the Netcare Sunninghill Hospital, after collapsing at his home on Saturday night.

Joost's publicist, Bridget van Oerle, has dispelled claims that van der Westhuizen suffered a stroke or heart attack saying the former rugby star is undergoing tests to determine exactly what caused his collapse as well as the cause of his chest pains.

Van der Westhuizen was admitted to the facility after returning from the British and Irish Lions test match at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria.

His hospital admission came hours after his Bulls teammate, Ruben Kruger was rushed to the Pretoria East Hospital after an accident while Blue Bulls Company Chief Executive, Barend van Graan, was also admitted to hospital at the weekend after experiencing chest pains as well.

Van der Westhuizen made headlines recently after a video surfaced allegedly showing him cavorting with an exotic dancer and snorting a white powder.

Meanwhile, Hofmeyr said Van der Westhuizen's life has been extremely stressful after the leak of a sex video in which he was allegedly implicated, emerged several months ago.

"I speak to Joost weekly and the stress that he must be going through is just unbearable. It is time to put an end to these predatory paparazzi who think they have learnt nothing from Lady Di," responded Hofmeyr emphatically.
