Residents have vowed to make Standerton ungovernable to show their unhappiness at the municipality's response to their demands, a community leader said on Wednesday.

"As we said in our memorandum if our needs are not met we will make this municipality ungovernable," said community leader Phanuel Manana following a meeting with the municipal manager of the troubled Lekwa municipality.

Lekwa in Mpumalanga incorporates the town of Standerton and the township of Sakhile which have been rocked by violence and service delivery protests in the past two weeks.

"The municipal manager said he did not get positive feedback from province," Manana said.

The Mpumalanga government on Wednesday issued a "recovery plan of action" for Lekwa municipality.

The recovery plan responds to the findings and recommendation of the investigations conducted in the municipality," said a statement from the provincial department of co-operative governance and traditional affairs.

In the statement the department promises to recover irregularly and illegally paid monies and will lay criminal charges against officials and service providers who have defrauded the municipality.

Manana said residents would stage sit-ins at the municipal offices until management explained to them what they were using taxpayers money for.

Residents have accused municipal officials of corruption, of being unqualified for their positions and of having lost R30-million meant to improve services.

Manana said he condemned vandalism but understood that residents were not able to contain their anger.
