The Presidency has confirmed President Jacob Zuma has begun the process of appointing a new police chief.

Current National Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi has been on special leave pending the outcome of his corruption case.

Selebi's contract was renewed by former president Thabo Mbeki in June 2008.

However, it was expected that his agreement would expire on Tuesday. But both his lawyers and the presidency have confirmed that it will only end in a month's time.

His lawyers commented that he has not yet been informed about whether his contract will be renewed. They say he does not want to continue serving in a post in which he is not wanted.

"By the time the contract for the current commissioner expires. The president would have made up his mind. There should be an announcement pretty soon. The president has started working on this process," explained the Presidency's Thabo Masebe.

A few names have been identified as potential candidates and the president has been looking internally, as well as externally, for a suitable replacement.
