The Egyptian ambassador to South Africa has called for an apology over reports that prostitutes robbed his country’s soccer team.

The team reported a robbery at their Illovo hotel after their 1-0 win over Italy during the 2009 Confederations Cup soccer tournament earlier this month.

Newspaper reports quoted unnamed police officials who claimed the team was robbed by sex workers they had invited to their rooms for post-match celebrations. But CCTV footage from the hotel proves otherwise.

The police's Brian Oppelt admitted that police have no leads despite a multi-pronged team of dedicated detectives investigating the matter. Close circuit footage from the hotel proves the team’s members returned to their rooms without the prostitutes which local media reports claim they had hired.

Ambassador Mohamed Zayed has demanded public retractions from the South African media, adding the reports damaged the team’s reputation in their home country.

"All of this information is going to be corrected. If this doesn't happen extreme measures will be taken," Zayed warned.

The police said the docket will be passed on to the Director of Public Prosecutions for a decision about how to proceed with the investigation.
