A Parkmore domestic worker has defended her employer, who shot and killed her grandson on Tuesday night, saying he was protecting his family.

The child was in the employee's outhouse when the home owner opened fire on him, believing there was an intruder in the garden.

The child's grandmother, Elizabeth Ramolefe, was comforted by friends and family at her employer's home in Parkmore as visitors arrived to convey their condolences.

Ramolefe's daughter was also at the house however she was too traumatised to talk and she too was being consoled by family as she huddled under a blanket.

Ramolefe explained that her 11-year-old grandchild was inside her out house when he began screaming for help.

She immediately thought there was a break-in and called her employer for assistance at which point the man fired a warning shot in the child's direction, killing him.

The employer faces a charge of murder.
