The Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa said it would impose fines against the South African Broadcasting Corporation if it continued to refer to Pretoria as Tshwane.

On Tuesday, civil rights movement AfriForum won its year-long battle against the public broadcaster's use of the municipal name Tshwane when referring to the capital city.

AfriForum's Kallie Kriel said any fines imposed by the BCCSA would only hurt the public broadcaster — given its current financial standing.

"The money should rather be used to pay actors in local productions rather than fight for names," Kriel commented.
