A hijacker was accidentally shot dead by his accomplice in Durban on Friday evening, Netcare 911 said.

It was initially reported that the victim was a bystander.

However, Netcare spokesperson Jeff Wicks said a woman was on her way to a party when two hijackers approached her while she was driving on Manning Road at around 6.30pm.

"A man who saw what was happening came to the woman's aid and there was a scuffle. A shot went off and one hijacker was hit in the head."

One of the hijackers opened fire on the man but missed. The bullet hit his 45-year-old partner in the head, fatally wounding him.

The remaining three men then fled in their vehicle leaving their dead friend behind.

No one else was injured in the incident.

Police identified the man as a wanted hijacker. Cases of attempted murder and hijacking were being investigated.
