President Jacob Zuma will have to move fast to appoint an interim board to run the SABC.

The National Assembly approved moves to dissolve the beleaguered broadcaster's board on Wednesday.

Zuma now has to hammer the final nail in the existing board's coffin.

Opposition parties went out of their way to blame the African National Congress for the mess at the SABC during the robust debate.

Despite some protests, however, the board is a step away from being dissolved.

If the president gives the go-ahead, MPs will be asked to move with speed to draw up a list of five names.

The names will then go to Zuma, so he can make the appointments official or change them.

In the meantime, Parliament will have to start the lengthy process of establishing a permanent board to oversee the troubled broadcaster.

The SABC has conceded that its image is at an all-time low.

The broadcaster has requested government to come to its rescue with a R2-billion bail out package.

Spokesperson Kaizer Kanyago says he knows their financial woes have seen public confidence plummet in recent week, but he does believe that they will make a financial turnaround.

"When we deal with the issues of our financial crisis, we will be able to pay people but people must also understand the developmental side of the way we do things. This SABC's going to be turned around."
