President Jacob Zuma must now confirm the make-up of the new interim SABC board within 10 days.

The National Assembly voted on five board members on Thursday but opposition parties were unimpressed saying the board lacked broad political representation.

The announcement by ANC MP Eric Kholwane that the ANC was not prepared to drop the name of Unisa academic Philip Mthimkhulu from its list sparked criticism from opposition party MPs like Patricia de Lille: "The Independent Democrats will withdraw our support for all five nominations.”

The DA and Cope followed suit insisting they wanted former World Bank MD Mamphela Ramphele on the board.

In the end a vote had to be taken which was likely to set the tone for next week's debate in the National Assembly.
