KwaZulu-Natal residents and international tourists on Friday were still eagerly waiting for the first big shoal of sardines to hit the shorelines.

Natal Sharks Board spokeswoman Debbie Hargreaves said sardines had been spotted by a pilot flying over Port St Johns last week. No one had so far been able to make a sardine catch on the shores, she said.

"In spite of good sea and weather conditions with waves ranging from two and five metres and light winds, there is no good news on sardines as yet."

"Conditions are ideal for netting but it is still early days."

Over the past 11 years sardines had flooded the coastline of the South Coast in June and July.
