Gifted Cape Town photographer Garth Stead was found dead in his Woodstock home on Monday morning.

Stead, photo editor at Foto24, and previously Die Burger's photo editor, apparently committed suicide.

He studied at the University of Natal in Durban before joining the photographic department of the Cape Times in 1996, where he won a Fuji Press Award.

Stead also worked as a stills photographer for various international television and feature films, and was deeply involved in training young photographers.

He was a founder of the Icon Image School of Photography.

Fellow photographer Mike Hutchings, who discovered his body, said Stead had been "uniquely talented".

"He was a very compassionate person, and it showed in his work," he said.

"The one thing that stands out about his photography is its sensitivity, and that will be remembered for a long, long time."

He said Stead had been devoted to his two young children.

Stead was divorced from their mother.
