A man was arrested in connection with a hit-and-run accident in Soweto that left a 74-year-old man dead, Gauteng police said on Tuesday.

Inspector Kay Makhuvele said the incident occurred on 24 September in Moletsane.

"The old man was walking on the side of a road in Moletsane, when the 34-year-old driver knocked him with his bakkie... he didn't even stop, he just carried on driving, leaving the old man to die alone at the scene."

Makhuvele said the elderly man was found a few hours later.

"After thorough investigations, we arrested the man at his home in Mondeor on Monday... he denied being involved in the incident at first and resisted arrest, but admitted to hitting the man once he was at the police station."

The bakkie was found in the man's yard and a dent that was allegedly obtained when he hit the man was still on the front of the vehicle.

"He didn't even fix it... he told police that it was from a fender bender... but later told us that that was a lie as well," Makhuvele said.

The man will appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court shortly.

He faces charges of culpable homicide.
