A 36-year-old paraglider fell to his death in Nigel when his safety chute failed to open, police said on Tuesday.

Inspector Madelein von Weilligh said the man went paragliding with a paragliding group at the old Dunnottar air force base on the East Rand on Sunday and failed to return from his flight.

"His friends started looking for him but as far as I know nobody reported him missing at the police," said Von Weilligh.

The local emergency services joined the search on Monday, but called in the help of the Dunnottar SAPS dog unit when they could not find him.

"He was found on the farm Bloemendal near Nigel around 10.30am on Monday."

Von Weilligh withheld the man's name as his next of kin had not been notified.

An inquest docket has been opened to investigate his death.
