One of six men who allegedly held up a bakery in the
Johannesburg CBD has been arrested, police said on Wednesday.
"It is alleged that six suspects entered the store pretending to be customers, they pulled out firearms and demanded money," said Inspector Xoli Mbele.
The men held up nine workers, including the owner of the bakery and his wife, on the corner of Market and Nugget streets on
Tuesday.
When police arrived at the scene five of the men had taken an undisclosed amount of money and fled in a white Volkswagen Polo.
One of the gunmen was left behind and tried to run away.
Police gave chase and the man shot at them. Police returned fire.
The man was arrested on Marshall street after he sustained multiple gun shot wounds to the lower body. He was taken to hospital under police guard.
Some of the stolen money, a knife and unlicensed firearm were allegedly recovered from the man.
His five accomplices were still at large and the police
investigation was continuing.
The arrested man would soon appear in the Johannesburg
Magistrate's Court.
