A Soweto mother has told of her shock that the soccer fields where her son was killed in a freak accident were not properly maintained.

Ten-year-old Onele Hohlo died on Tuesday after a rusty goalpost fell on top of him. The child was playing soccer with friends when the accident occurred.

Onele's mother, Nomalungisa Hohlo, said the children were unaware the goalpost was unstable.

"The ball hit the pole and the pole fell down on the boy. We are upset as the family. This boy was young, these kids got in and the gate was not closed. There's no one that takes care of the grounds," she said.

Police are investigating the accident.
