More than half a million people in Gauteng sought HIV/Aids treatment from public health facilities last year, the provincial health department said on Friday.

"The number of people assessed grew from 450 706 the previous year to 540 115 last year," the department said in a statement.

The number of those who qualified and were given antiretrovirals went up 56 percent.

The department said it stepped up prevention measures during the year under review, providing 150 million male condoms and 1.2 million female condoms.

More than 46 000 pregnant mothers were put on treatment to prevent the transmission of the virus to their unborn babies.

Infections in young people aged 15 to 19 years declined by half, from two percent to one percent, while infections in young children aged from two to 14 dropped 2.2 percent.

This was attributed to the success of the prevention of mother to child transmission programme.
