Gauteng Community Safety MEC Khabisi Mosunkutu slammed Diepsloot residents for going on the rampage on Sunday.

Angry residents blockaded roads with rocks, rubble and burning tyres they also stoned cars and petrol bombed at least one vehicle.

Chaos erupted after Ward 95 local councillor Jan Mahlangu informed them that more than 300 shacks would have to be demolished and relocated to make way for the installation of sewerage pipes.

"They must bear responsibility"

But, angry demonstrators refused to listen to him demanding RDP homes which they claim were promised to them.

Mosunkutu said Diepsloot community leaders, who masterminded Sunday's violent protests, will face the full might of the law: "They must bear responsibility for what has happened."

He lashed out at residents for having taken their demonstration too far when they petrol bombed a South African Broadcasting Corporation news vehicle and stoned several police vans.

"Those who are responsible for the chaos must understand that in fact they encourage lawlessness, illegality and that can't be acceptable," he said disapprovingly.

Police will continue patrolling the area until calm is restored.
