A senior police officer, who fired live ammunition at his colleagues last year, has returned to work.

Superintendent Kganane Tau was suspended after the incident at the police garage in Silverton, near Pretoria.

The incident was sparked by a labour dispute and it is understood a disciplinary committee only ordered Kganane to pay a R500 fine.

Police management would not explain why he was allowed to return to the same position, saying the correct procedures were followed.

Junior police officials at the Silverton garage said they fear the next time Superintendent Tau loses his temper, one of them will die.

One man remarked that since Tau has returned he has already begun verbally abusing some of his subordinates.
