A teacher convicted of dragging his dog behind his vehicle earlier this year was on Tuesday sentenced to 18 months in prison by the Kokstad Magistrate's Court.

Half of the sentence was suspended.

Andile Jezile also had the option of paying a R3000 fine.

He was arrested in January, charged with seven counts under the Animal Protection Act, and later released on bail.

Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Kokstad said they had initially opposed an admission of guilt fine, and were not pleased with the outcome of the case.

"We are not too happy. He didn't get much," Wolhuter said.

The SPCA wanted a maximum sentence of three years.

The society said it would wait to see what impact the sentence would have on the teacher's career.
