North West police arrested three men who allegedly robbed and killed a Potchefstroom shop owner on Monday.

Two men accosted two furniture shop employees carrying two briefcases containing an undisclosed amount of money and airtime vouchers in the parking lot outside the shop, Superintendent Lesego Metsi said.

"It is alleged that two of the four suspects approached the two employees and hit one of them in the face with the butt of a firearm, slightly injuring him."

When the shop owner, waiting for the two in his car, alighted from the vehicle, two other suspected thieves emerged from a grey VW Polo, shot him and fled with the briefcases. The man was declared dead on arrival in hospital.

Police chased the robbers to Ikageng where a shootout ensued.

"The suspects, under pressure from the police, abandoned their vehicle at a crossroad in Extension 6 and ran into the nearby informal settlement."

One of the men dropped his gun and surrendered to police. His two accomplices were arrested while changing their clothes between shacks. A second firearm was confiscated. The stolen briefcases were found inside the car. The fourth robber managed to run away.

The trio would appear in the Potchefstroom Magistrate's Court soon on charges of murder, attempted murder, armed robbery and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
