A Kimberley police constable has been arrested for allegedly intimidating, assaulting and raping his former wife, the Independent Complaints Directorate said on Monday.

"It is alleged that on 25 October 2009, while under the influence of alcohol, the accused visited his ex-wife with the intention to see his children," said ICD spokesperson Moses Dlamini.

A disagreement ensued during which the policeman allegedly assaulted, strangled then raped her.

He then tried to burn the bedding, but the woman extinguished the fire.

"The victim further alleges that the constable threatened to kill her if she reported the incident to the police," Dlamini said.

However, she confided in her pastor and a friend. This led to the arrest and subsequent detention of her former husband.

Dlamini said the ICD would investigate and make a recommendation to the Director of Public Prosecution on prosecution.
