The mayor of the Northern Cape's Dikgatlong municipality resigned on Tuesday, SABC radio news reported.

Martha Louw's decision followed last week's protest by locals who demanded she step down. They accused her of corruption and maladministration.

Barkly West is the municipality's administrative centre.

The decision was taken in a meeting between Louw and African National Congress provincial senior leaders. It was agreed it was in the best interests of the community, Louw and the ANC.

Last week police arrested 10 people for public violence during a protest in Barkly West's Mataleng township.
