The African National Congress' (ANC) National Executive Committee (NEC) has two weeks in which to set up a task team to help run the party in the Western Cape.

It was confirmed on Sunday, at a special Provincial General Council Meeting, in Athlone Cape Town, that the ANC's provincial structure has been dissolved.

NEC member Nomvula Mokonyane said the provincial task team will take over the ANC's affairs in the province and the party has nine months to elect a new provincial executive committee.

Addressing the meeting was NEC stalwart Jeremy Cronin who cited reasons such as in fighting, for the decision to disband the Western Cape's leadership.

Most officials welcomed the move saying it was long overdue while a senior party official emphasised that ultimately the NEC should be held responsible for the failures of rebuilding the organisation in the Cape.

While various Western Cape leaders did attend the gathering, Provincial Chairperson Mcebisi Skwatsha was conspicuous in his absence.

He has been largely blamed for the ANC's poor performance during by elections and at the 22 April polls.
