Soweto police believe they may have unraveled the blue light gang after arresting an Ekurhuleni metro police officer and two other men in the area.

Residents called police after they heard gunshots in Diepkloof in the early hours of Monday morning.

The police's Lugelo Dlamini said the men were travelling in a black Mercedes Benz fitted with police lights and a siren.

Authorities noticed the vehicle alongside the Soweto highway and arrested the gang members.

"Four fire arms were found and there were also about 20 ID documents and one passport," Dlamini explained.

Police are investigating whether the men are responsible for other blue light crimes, particularly around OR Tambo International Airport, where foreigners are often targeted after landing in the country.
