The Equality Court in Johannesburg was set to hear final arguments on Monday in ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema's rape hate speech case.

Malema is facing complaints of hate speech and harassment for saying, at an election rally in January, that President Jacob Zuma's rape accuser "had a nice time".

The Sonke Gender Justice Network laid the complaint, saying the comment was very damaging to rape victims and women who were afraid to lodge rape complaints.

It wants a full apology and R50 000 in damages to be paid to a shelter for abused women.

During the hearings, Malema defended himself by saying the comment was based on a specific incident and was not a general statement.

He said it was based on Judge Willem van der Merwe's judgment which acquitted Zuma of rape in 2006.
