Buffalo City mayor Zukiswa Faku failed to pitch up for an ANC disciplinary committee hearing on Monday, committee chairman Siphiwo Burwana said.

"Yes, she was meant to appear today, but she did not appear... we will be announcing the way forward at a press conference tomorrow [Tuesday]," he said.

The media briefing, where Faku's fate would be announced, would take place in East London at 10am.

Faku had allegedly been using the council's petrol and credit cards for herself.

ANC Amathole regional spokesperson Mziwamadoda Sotshana said the disciplinary committee process went ahead without her on Monday.

"It's a confidential process until the disciplinary committee completes its work and presents a report to us and the national disciplinary committee."

According to the Daily Dispatch online, Faku has been charged along with five others for bringing the party into disrepute and collaborating with the opposition.

Burwana said a total of 28 councillors would appear before the committee. The date for the hearings would be decided after November 6.

Sotshana declined to provide details of the charges against Faku, but said the region felt she had a case to answer.

"There are charges for sure... [we] feel as a region that there is a basis to the charges."

According to the Dispatch the charges against Faku, Luleka Simon, Sindiswa Gomba, Thembisa Nondala and Neliswa Dumezweni and councillor Mzimkulu Mabeta arose from the appointment of Mandla Sithole as municipal manager, against the wishes of the regional ANC.

They also related to a failure to attend an ANC caucus and council meeting where it was decided to put former chief whip Sony du Plessis on forced leave for taking the municipality to court.

Mabeta failed to appear before the disciplinary committee last Thursday, culminating in the committee recommending his expulsion from the organisation.

Regional disciplinary committee chairman, Siphiwo Burwana, told the Dispatch the committee "led evidence that he [Mabeta] was undermining the regional structure".
