Buffalo City mayor Zukiswa Faku has been expelled, effectively forfeiting her post, ANC regional disciplinary committee chairperson Siphiswo Burwana said on Tuesday.

"We decided to expel her from the ANC, but that decision is suspended until it has been confirmed by the National Disciplinary Committee [NDC]," he said.

Her expulsion, should it be confirmed by the NDC, would mean she would lose her job as mayor in the Eastern Cape municipality.

Faku failed to pitch for a disciplinary hearing on Monday where she was meant to face 12 charges for using council petrol and credit cards for her personal use, among other things.

She reportedly used the credit card to buy clothing and leather goods to the value of R15 146 for herself during an official trip to Turkey and to put fuel into vehicles not belonging to the municipality.

She had also been charged, with five others, for bringing the party into disrepute and collaborating with the opposition.

This related to the appointment of Mandla Sithole as municipal manager, against the wishes of the regional African National Congress, Burwana confirmed.

Burwana said a total of 28 councillors would appear before the committee on various charges.

The date for the hearings would be decided after November 6.

The council's Luleka Simon, Sindiswa Gomba, Thembisa Nondala and Neliswa Dumezweni would appear before disciplinary hearings from Wednesday.

Councillor Mzimkulu Mabeta failed to appear before the disciplinary committee last Thursday, culminating in the committee recommending his expulsion from the organisation.

Burwana said his expulsion was also subject to confirmation by the NDC.
