The Automobile Association is calling on the country’s lawmakers to reduce the legal blood alcohol limit in order to save more lives.

The AA says the limit should be reduced to 0.02g/100ml as apposed to the current limit of 0.05g/100ml.

It says close to 50 percent of deaths or accidents on the country’s roads involve drivers who are under the influence of alcohol.

On Sunday, two Talk Radio 702 OUTsurance pointsmen were killed when a motorist, believed to be four times over the legal alcohol limit, ploughed into the convoy the pair was in.

The AA's Gary Ronald says reducing the current limit will deter drunk drivers from getting behind the wheel.

"One of the ways we can do this almost immediately together with a pretty strict law enforcement approach, is to reduce the alcohol limit to save around about five thousand lives every year in South Africa," says Ronald.
