Outgoing Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi has told Eyewitness News that former president Thabo Mbeki never protected him.

Selebi's contract expires on Friday — Cabinet will meet to decide on his successor and the announcement is expected to be made on Wednesday or Thursday.

Mbeki placed Selebi on special leave in January last year after he first appeared in court on corruption charges but the former president was slow to move against him and even extended his contract in July last year.

Selebi said he still has a good relationship with Mbeki but insists he was never protected by him.

"It is untrue for anybody to suggest he was protecting me so I can do crime. He has never done that and he would never do that," said Selebi commented.
