Do not pack away that winter wardrobe or swap your cappucino for
iced coffee just yet, as it looks as if a cold week lies ahead for
parts of South Africa.
There is even a small chance of snowfall in the Drakensberg before Tuesday, but the South African Weather Service (SAWS) said it would not be heavy enough to warrant getting out the carrot noses and snowman scarves.
"There is a small chance of light snowfalls on Drakensberg
mountain," SAWS forecaster Mark Todd said on Monday.
Todd put the chance of snow at 30 percent, but said a
sight-seeing visit to the area would not be worth it.
"You will not see anything as it will be cloudy," he said.
Todd said the snow was a result of a cold front and a high
pressure system bringing moisture to the eastern parts of the
country, including parts of the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and the Lowveld.
The area would remain cloudy and cool until the end of the week with some rainfall also possible.
"Cold and cloudy weather will reach Gauteng on Tuesday."
Todd said some coolish weather was not unexpected at this time of the year.
"It's not unusual to get a cold snap. What is unusual is how long it is lasting," he said explaining that this was the result of two weather systems coming in one after the other.
For Gautengers, the boerewors will not have to stay in the deep freeze for too long, as a warm and sunny weekend is expected.
