A man transporting pre-school children allegedly stabbed and wounded a pedestrian with a panga in Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape, The Herald Online reported on Wednesday.

Buyile Vani said the driver of the bakkie, who was transporting 10 pre-schoolers, was in a rush and almost ran him over while he was walking on a sidewalk on Tuesday.

"When I asked him why he was driving recklessly, he got angry and swore at me."

The man, known as "Daddy" to the children, stopped the bakkie and confronted Vani.

An argument ensued and the driver punched the pedestrian.

When Vani fought back, the man walked back to his bakkie and returned with a panga, with the children watching.

"He stabbed me five times ? in the chest, shoulder, buttock and near the belly button. I fell to the ground."

Police were called to the scene and the man was arrested for attempted murder.

Vani was in a serious condition in hospital.
