Five people were burnt to death and two police officials injured in a collision involving a police vehicle in Isipingo, south of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Friday.
Superintendent Buhle Ngidi said the accident happened on the Old Main Road and Lotus Park turn-off on Thursday night.
"An explosion occurred when two vehicles collided, five people were burnt beyond recognition [and] the other two are in a critical condition at Life Entabeni Hospital," said Ngidi.
Ngidi said the two injured men were police officials and were travelling in a police Toyota Condor.
"The deceased people were travelling in a Mercedes Benz and it is not clear what caused the accident, police are still investigating."
The victims' identities were not immediately known, said Ngidi.
